Supermarine Spitifre Prototype K5054
On the 5th of March 1936 the Spitfire prototype took off on its maiden flight from Eastleigh Aerodrome near Southampton with Captain Joseph “Matt” Summers at the controls. The first flight lasted approximately 8 minutes.
K5054 was later fitted with a new propeller and on the 10th of May in the same year Matt Summers flew the aircraft this time retracting the undercarriage for the first time.
The painting above shows The Prototype Spitfire K5054 on one of its test flights in May 1936.
