Commissioning an Original Oil Painting

The process of a commissioned artwork is often a very rewarding for both the artist and client.
Once initial contact has been established with the client time will be set aside to discuss the client’s first thoughts and ideas.  After the initial discussions are complete a number of rough pencil sketches are produced in order to obtain a good idea for composition and tonal value.
The above is very much a two way process, and when specific composition and accompany detail has been agreed the painting process can begin.
During work on the commission a regular update will be provided, either via e-mail of post this will be in the form of pictures of the paintings progress.
Pricing is dependent on the complexity and the amount of research required, and if the work will require framing before the handover.

Testimonials

I commissioned Martin to paint an image that my father remembered in World War Two. Martin kept me up to date with sketches and delivery time. He also gave me frame and size options and suggested suitable dimensions for such a painting. He always checked that what he was painting was how my father remembered and also that I was pleased with the progress. The painting was delivered on time and to complete satisfaction of myself and my father. I recommend Martin to anyone interested in Aviation Art.

Dad was thrilled to receive his painting, celebrating his 90th birthday, of one of the aircraft he’d flown on bombing operations in 1944. We so appreciated your help, especially in getting the details correct – he immediately picked up the correctly placed long range fuel tanks we’d agonised over and the correct aircraft number on the fuselage. Thank you so much for your care and expertise in creating this unusual and lasting gift. It now hangs above his fireplace and will, we’re sure, remain a treasured possession for the rest of his days.

I found working with Martin an easy and enjoyable process. His attention to detail and level of research into every angle of the project ensured we were rewarded with the painting we wanted. Martin worked tirelessly to deliver a truly unique piece of work and one I know my father is extremely happy with. A true homage to Al and all those that took to the skies during the war.

I was very pleased with your work in creating the “AL” over Waitarere scene. The painting has a special quality which captures the aircraft and the New Zealand countryside it will operate over soon. You have managed to give life to the aircraft and added inspiration for us to complete the restoration and to recreate this scene with “AL” in the not too distant future.

Not only has Martin produced a superb painting, his attention to detail and his eagerness to please make him a joy to work with. At all times we were consulted on content, colour, background etc. and then only when we were happy did he proceed to produce this very personal and exceptional painting – fabulous job, it will be treasured in our family for generations to come.

I contacted Martin regarding a composition I had in mind for Spitfires flying low over a winter scene.  After describing the composition in some detail, he quickly produced an excellent sketch, which captured the idea extremely well.  As the painting progressed regular updates were emailed to me for review and comment.  Throughout this consultative process I was able to request particular details and changes, which Martin undertook and returned to me quickly and efficiently.  The final stunning painting is a testament to Martin’s high level of cooperation and attention to detail.

We are very pleased with the painting that goes beyond our expectation.  Martin puts your heart into his work and is only happy if you are.  We most definitely are and with great communications throughout too.  Thank you for everything Martin, all highly appreciated.
