Boeing B17 Flying Fortress.
As a response to the Army's request for a large, multiengine bomber, the prototype B-17 (Model 299) financed entirely by Boeing, went from design board to flight test in less than 12 months.
Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry more than met the Air Corps' expectations, and outperformed both the competitors.
The B-17 began operations in World War II with the RAF in 1941, and the USAAF Eighth Air Force and Fifteenth Air Force units in 1942.
The above painting shows a B17 Flying Fortress from the 91st Bomber Group about to touch down at RAF Bassingbourn in Cambridgeshire England.
